Raising Our Children

Welcome to Be Like Brit, our Haiti home! Together, Len and I raised Britney, Bernie, and Richie in a house filled with love. While we were building Brit’s Orphanage in the months and years after her death, we knew that we wanted Be Like Brit to be a home, NOT an institution. We knew what we felt was important as parents, but we also knew the challenges to bringing that to a home that would eventually have 66 brothers and sisters living in it! Through the collective efforts of many, we put together what we believe to be a great way to respect and treat each of our 66 children as individuals, just as we did our own 3 children while they were growing up.
As part of the Individual Life Plan we have in place for each of our children, we pay particular attention to the Five Selves of Child Development. What this means is that together with our Haitian staff, primarily our Director Jonathan, our full-time, on-site staff social worker Gina, and an incredible team of devoted and loving caregivers and staff, we examine each child as the individuals they are.Rooted in the best-supported strategies available, we focus on the physical, emotional, cognitive, social, and spiritual selves of every one of our children at Be Like Brit. We thought you all would be interested in seeing just how we do that with our team on the ground in Haiti, and even through our Britsionary program with expert volunteers from the USA and Canada!
