About Be Like Brit

Short Version (50 words)

Be Like Brit Foundation operates Brit's Home for Children, an orphanage in Grand Goâve, Haiti. Founded in 2010 by the Gengel family after losing their daughter Britney in the Haiti earthquake, the organization provides comprehensive care, education, and a loving home to 66 children.

Long Version (150 words)

Be Like Brit Foundation was born from tragedy and transformed into hope. On January 12, 2010, Britney Gengel — a 19-year-old college student from Massachusetts — was killed in the Haiti earthquake while on a service trip. Just days before her death, she texted her father: "They love us so much and everyone is so happy. They have nothing. I want to move here and start an orphanage."

Her parents, Len and Cherylann Gengel, made Britney's dream a reality. In 2013, Brit's Home for Children opened its doors in Grand Goâve, Haiti. Today, the organization provides 66 children with safe housing, nutritious meals, quality education at Brit's Academy, medical care, and a path to independent adulthood through their Transition Program.

With 129 staff members — 98% Haitian — and a commitment to sending 83 cents of every donated dollar directly to programs, Be Like Brit has become a model for sustainable, community-based orphan care.
